OMI Athletics

At OMI we believe that the whole person should be educated at school, including the physical development, health, and wellness of the individual. Intramural and interscholastic sports as well as weekly physical education courses promote maximum health and wellness for all cadets.

The Athletic Department is an integral part of the total educational process of Oakland Military Institute (OMI) College Preparatory Academy.  Being involved in athletics provides the student with opportunities to develop leadership skills and to learn the ideals of fair play and ethical behavior necessary for competition and cooperation in our society. It should also provide our students with the unique opportunities for self-discipline, self-sacrifice, and loyalty to the community, the school, and the team.

OMI encourages all students to participate in athletics by offering a well-rounded program of interscholastic athletics for both young men and women. Competition and cooperation are prized in our culture, and a well-conducted athletic program under competent leadership fosters both. Athletics regulated to meet educational objectives can provide a major contribution to the physical and moral development of students.

OMI fields seven interscholastic high school teams: boys basketball, baseball, soccer; girls basketball, volleyball, softball; and boys/girls golf. OMI also has a growing middle school interscholastic program of flag football, volleyball, soccer, and basketball. OMI also plays rugby as a club sport.

The primary goals of the athletic program for the young men and women of OMI are as follows:

  1. To provide an athletic program that is responsive to the expressed needs,
interests, and abilities of the students and which is consistent with available facilities, equipment and staff.
  2. To provide an athletic program that will satisfy both the competitive needs as well as recreational needs of students.
  3. To provide equal opportunity for all students in the athletic program.
  4. To provide an athletic program that will promote physical well-being and
desirable attitudes in leadership and sportsmanship for both the participants
    and spectators.
  5. To provide an athletic program that is an integral part of the educational program.
  6. To provide the students with a qualified staff to coach and supervise all
    aspects of the athletic program.

CALIFORNIA INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION (CIF)

The OMI High School is a member of the Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). CIF is the governing body of high school athletics in the state of California. The objectives of this organization are:

  • To serve as an organization through which member high schools mutually adopt
rules and regulations for interscholastic athletic competition so that Boards of
Education and school faculties will regard interscholastic athletics as an
educational resource to be encouraged and fostered.
  • To establish the responsibility for the administration of high school athletics
by member schools in order to ensure satisfactory supervision.
  • To provide a constitution, by-laws, and organization through which member
schools shall administer their interscholastic athletic programs.
  • To cultivate cordial and friendly relations among schools through good
    standards of sportsmanship.

To promote equal opportunities for all involved in California secondary school athletic programs regardless of race, religion, gender, or national origin.

  1. To promote the acceptance of the Cardinal Principles and Code of Ethics of
    the California Interscholastic Federation.
  2. CIF CODE OF ETHICS It is the duty of all concerned with High School Athletics:
    • To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and
      fair play.
    • To eliminate all possibilities which tend to destroy the best values
      of the game.
    • To stress the values derived from playing the game fairly.
    • To show cordial courtesy to visiting teams and officials.
    • To establish a happy relationship between visitors and hosts.
    • To respect the integrity and judgment of sports officials.
    • To achieve a thorough understanding and acceptance of the rules of
the game and the standards of eligibility.
    • To encourage leadership, use of initiative, and good judgment by
      the players.
    • To recognize that the purpose of athletics is to promote the physical,
mental, moral, social, and emotional well-being of the individual players.
    • To remember that an athletic contest is only a game--not a matter
of life and death for player, coach, school, officials, fan, community,
      state, or nation.

PRE-SEASON MEETINGS

It is required, as soon as possible and before league begins, the coach of each sport meets with all student-athletes under his/her guidance and discusses the following:

  1. Safety requirements
  2. Facility rules/policies
  3. Team rules Schedules Transportation arrangements
  4. Uniforms and equipment
  5. Athletic Letter Requirements

The coach also schedules a pre-season meeting with parents (see Parent Involvement).

POST SEASON MEETINGS

Once the season has completely ended, including league and any post season playoffs, the coach schedules a “wrap up” meeting to review the season and set expectations for the following year to include; team performance, individual player conferences, off season training suggestions.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Parents play an important role in our athletic program. Working with the OMI Community to garner support and promote school spirit, excellence, and leadership is a critical responsibility of OMI coaches. Having involved, supportive, and positive sport parents is paramount for ensuring kids have enjoyable sport experiences and for a smooth-running sport programs. However, there are guidelines on their role.

Parent / Guardian Meetings The Coach schedules a pre-season parent/guardian meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to select Team Parent / guardians who can assist with snack coordination, facilitate team communication, and assist with team functions such as the awards ceremony. Parent / guardians are expected to volunteer 5 – 10 hours during the season. A list of volunteers is sent to the OMI Athletic Director. Also discussed are practice and game schedule, tournaments, and options for uniforms including care and maintenance fees.

Communicating with Parent / Guardians All coaches are responsible for notifying parent / guardians in writing about their team, including but not limited to, any change in their child’s participation on the team, information about parent / guardian informational meetings, game and practice schedules, and eligibility status. The OMI athletic director approve all communications prior to dissemination.

AWARDS NIGHT (one for each season)

The purpose of Awards Night is three-fold; (1) increase awareness and support of the athletic program, (2) summarize the current sport season and (3) recognize outstanding performance by individual athletes. OMI Coaches and Parent / Guardians sponsor the awards night for all sports following each season. All sports for that season are represented. Coaches make a short presentation about the season and recognize outstanding athletic performance. The evening lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes and parent / guardian provided refreshments are served. Each coach gives the Athletic Director a list of athletes who will receive their letter, certificates, and special awards.
